How My Friends Must Die

Most of you still have time to die young
If you don’t hurry up, you’ll have to die
Middle-aged
Which is neither here nor there
So hard to find a hook for the eulogy
Unless you were doing something
Specific and noteworthy with your life
Otherwise I’ll have to lapse into platitude
‘Cut down in the midst of life’, ‘his race half run’
‘Taken in her prime’ ‘Her best years barely begun’
It sounds so weak and there is no Bardic crutch

So please, my friends, if you love me well
Die now
Or live interestingly
